  • - The Colombian infectologist and epidemiologist who has been advising the National Government since the beginning of the year, was appointed this Friday, April 17, by the WHO. 
 
Bogota D.C., April 17th, 2020. The World Health Organization, WHO, appointed Dr. Carlos Álvarez, Colombian epidemiologist, Vice President of the Colsanitas Clinic and member of the Colombian Association of Infectious Diseases, as the national coordinator of studies on Covid-19 in Colombia.
 
From next week, Colombia will begin to participate in the clinical trials of the World Health Organization that are intended to help respond more quickly if promising drugs are effective for Covid-19. The objective is that several institutions in the country with experience in clinical research are linked to the research strategies and can elucidate in a more agile way the usefulness of drugs such as hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir, Remdesivir, among others.
 
In his resume, Dr. Álvarez, in addition to a master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, also has a specialization in Tropical Medicine from the University of Alabama (United States) and a master's degree in HIV/AIDS from the Rey Juan Carlos University (Spain). He is currently Vice President of Health at Colsanitas Clinic, with more than 300 medical centers under his command. 
 
Since the beginning of 2020, this 49-year-old from Bogotá has been part of the medical advisory team of President Iván Duque and the Ministry of Health in the management of the Covid-19 pandemic. 
 
In addition to his work and research activities, Dr. Álvarez is a renowned professor at the National University of Colombia.
